Acupoints

Acupoints are named locations used within traditional East Asian medicine. The everyday Korean term literally means blood points, but it refers to acupuncture points rather than points containing blood.

Names and locations

Points such as Hegu and Zusanli have established names and locations in traditional medicine. International standards align their names, codes, and locations. Standardizing terminology does not by itself validate every claimed effect in modern medicine.

Meridians and pressure spots

Meridians describe a traditional system of channels and networks. Acupoints are named locations within that system. A pressure spot in sensory science refers to skin sensation and is not an acupoint.

Scope of this term

This glossary entry explains the classification, not instructions for treating symptoms by pressing particular points. Acupuncture pierces the skin and belongs to a different scope from ordinary esthetic hands-on care.
