Exfoliation Care
Exfoliation care uses a product or tool to remove cells from the surface of the skin. This is different from the skin’s natural process of shedding outer cells.
The stratum corneum
The stratum corneum is the outermost layer of the epidermis and part of the skin barrier. Its cells naturally shed over time. Visible flakes do not mean the entire protective layer should be scrubbed away.

Physical and chemical exfoliation
Physical exfoliation uses friction from a scrub or tool. Chemical exfoliation uses ingredients such as acids or enzymes. Either type may irritate the skin depending on the product, frequency, and skin condition.
Limits of exfoliation
Skin may feel smoother or look brighter for a time after exfoliation. More frequent exfoliation is not always better, especially for sensitive, dry, or inflamed skin. Exfoliation is not the same as acne treatment or tissue regeneration.
