Its cells naturally shed over time. Chemical exfoliation uses ingredients such as acids or enzymes. Either type may irritate the skin depending on the product, frequency, and skin condition.

Limits of exfoliation

Skin may feel smoother or look brighter for a time after exfoliation. More frequent exfoliation is not always better, especially for sensitive, dry, or inflamed skin. Exfoliation is not the same as acne treatment or tissue regeneration.

Related terms

Stratum corneum: The outermost layer of the epidermis.

Skin barrier: The skin’s protection against water loss and outside irritants.

Skin texture: How the skin surface looks and feels.

What exfoliation care means, how physical and chemical exfoliation differ, and why the stratum corneum matters.

["post-1051","mec_glossary","type-mec_glossary","status-publish","hentry
["GET
