It also doesn’t point to one diagnosis or cause. Esthetic care doesn’t diagnose the cause. It focuses on avoiding extra irritation.

Defining features of sensitive skin

The central feature is what the person feels, not only what can be seen. A product, temperature change, or friction that feels fine to someone else may sting or burn. The face is the most common site, although any body area can be affected.

Redness and dryness may appear, but they aren’t required. The reverse is also true: red skin isn’t automatically sensitive skin. The trigger and the unpleasant sensation need to be considered together.

Sensitive skin is cared for by easing irritation and helping it settle.

Barrier and sensory-nerve factors

Sensitive skin doesn’t have one settled mechanism. Research looks at both changes in barrier function and heightened responses in cutaneous sensory nerves. A weakened barrier can make skin more open to outside influences, but barrier disruption doesn’t explain every case.

Weather, hot water, friction, cleansers, and cosmetics are common triggers. The exact product or ingredient differs from person to person. Contact dermatitis can also develop after exposure to something that was tolerated before.

Distinction from skin disease

Contact dermatitis, atopic dermatitis, rosacea, and other conditions can sit behind a complaint of sensitive skin. Hives, oozing, swelling, cracking, or symptoms that persist need a dermatologist rather than repeated product changes.

An esthetician can’t diagnose an allergy to a specific ingredient. Recurrent reactions may need a medical history, examination, and testing.

Scope of esthetic care

Esthetic care doesn’t claim to cure sensitive skin or change someone’s constitution. The session is adjusted to reduce unnecessary triggers.

Recent products and situations that caused stinging or burning are discussed first.

Several new or potentially irritating products aren’t layered at once.

Heat, friction, and strong exfoliation are avoided.

Pressure and time are lowered during manual massage.

Stinging or heat during a session should be reported right away. Strong discomfort isn’t proof that a treatment is working.

Related terms

Skin barrier: The stratum corneum’s role in controlling water loss and entry of outside substances.

Irritant contact dermatitis: Inflammation caused by direct irritation from a substance or physical factor.

Allergic contact dermatitis: An immune reaction to a specific substance that needs medical diagnosis.

Facial redness: Visible color caused by dilation of small skin vessels. It may occur with sensitive skin but isn’t the same condition.

Frequently asked questions

Does sensitive skin mean thin skin?
No. Sensitive skin is defined by unpleasant sensory responses, not skin thickness alone.

Is a gentle product safe for everyone?
No label can guarantee an individual’s response. Introduce products one at a time and watch how the skin reacts.

Should stinging during a facial be tolerated?
No. Tell the practitioner immediately. Pushing through strong irritation doesn’t make the session more effective.

This glossary entry is for general information.
