Hyperpigmentation

Hyperpigmentation means an area of skin appears darker than the surrounding skin. It is a medical term, although everyday use may include many dark marks with different causes.

Darker areas of skin

An increase or concentration of melanin can create brown or gray areas. Causes include changes after inflammation or injury and pigmentation related to sun exposure. Similar-looking marks do not always share the same cause.

Dark spots and melasma

Dark spots is an everyday umbrella term. Melasma is a specific acquired pigmentation disorder that commonly appears on the face. Appearance alone may not distinguish one type of pigmentation from another.

Skin care and treatment

Sun protection and avoiding irritation can help limit worsening in some cases. Esthetic care should not be described as removing or treating hyperpigmentation. A mark that changes quickly, bleeds, or looks unusual needs medical assessment.
